The family Goneplacidae MacLeay, 1838 (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura): systematics, phylogeny, and fossil records

A phylogenetic analysis of 14 genera of the family Goneplacidae MacLeay (Decapoda: Brachyura: Xanthoidea) is presented based upon 45 adult morphological characters. Two most-parsimonious trees were obtained (length = 87, CI = 0.6667, RI = 0.8242, RC = 0.5495). The present analysis suggests that the Goneplacidae is divided into six subfamilies: Carinocarcinoidinae subfam. nov., Chasmocarcininae ...

The position of the Hymenosomatidae MacLeay, 1838, within the Brachyura (Crustacea, Decapoda)

The Hymenosomatidae is unique among the Brachyura on the basis of spermatozoal ultrastructure and morphological characters of the adults and larvae. The location of the hymenosomatid male gonopore, always a controversial question, is here shown to be sternal, not coxo-sternal. This disposition, analogous to the arrangement of Thoracotremata, contradicts all morphological characters that indicat...

Odiomarinae nov. subfam., a new subfamily for two primitive genera of Hymenosomatidae MacLeay, 1838, with preliminary remarks on the family (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura)

A new subfamily Odiomarinae nov. subfam. is erected to receive two primitive genera of the eubrachyuran family Hymenosomatidae MacLeay, 1838: Odiomaris Ng & Richer de Forges, 1996, and Amarinus Lucas, 1980, mostly from fresh and estuarine waters of the Indo-West Pacific region. The new subfamily is characterised by the presence of “intercalated platelets” on the male abdomen, either articulated...

Revision of Portunoidea Rafinesque, 1815 (Decapoda: Brachyura) with Emphasis on the Fossil Genera and Families

The superfamily Portunoidea including extinct lineages is herein evaluated via cladistic analysis of adult morphological characters and traditional systematics. Nearly every fossil species has been examined via type material, or if this was not possible, through illustrations and original descriptions. The analyses indicate that the superfamily is much more diverse at the family level than has ...

Description of a new species of Potamonautes MacLeay, 1838, from the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa

A new species of freshwater crab, Potamonautesisimangaliso sp. n., is described from the western shores of False Bay, Hluhluwe, within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa. While bearing a superficial resemblance to Potamonauteslividus, the new species has been found to be genetically distinct, diverging from the former by 7.4-7.8% in mtDNA. Potamonautesisimangaliso most closely resemble...
